Jason in Japan443 viewsMajor League Baseballers: Boston Red Sox’ Jason Varitek, Alex Cora, and David Ortiz.
March 24, Tokyo: A new and perhaps improved World Baseball Classic, slated for next March, was unveiled here Monday morning by Major League Baseball.
With Red Sox [team stats] players David Ortiz [stats] (Dominican Republic), Jason Varitek [stats] (United States) and Alex Cora [stats] (Puerto Rico) taking part in a press conference at the New Otani Hotel, the revised international tournament should have a more even distribution of talent than the inaugural event in 2006, and none of the first-round venues will be located in the United States.
“I had a phenomenal time in 2006,” Varitek said. “The excitement was phenomenal, the level of play was phenomenal and I would encourage more American players to play this time.”

Jason in Japan562 viewsMike Lowell and Jason Varitek of Boston Red Sox attend Ricoh MLB Opening Series press conference at Tokyo Dome on March 21, 2008 in Tokyo, Japan.
From the Boston Herald:
"Jason Varitek and Mike Lowell took the stage together to answer a few questions. The process took awhile, since their remarks had to be translated, plus English questions had to be translated for the Japanese, Japanese questions had to be translated for the players and U.S. media and -- you get the picture.
After one such back-and-forth in which Lowell answered a question and then Varitek was asked for his response. He paused and said, grinning widely, 'Can you repeat the question?' "
