Massachusetts Teachers Association
In 2005, Jason teamed up with Verizon and the Massachusetts Teacher’s Association to challenge children to be “A World Champion Reader” in the Red Sox Reading Game. The challenge was for a child to read nine books with the chance to win free tickets to see a game at Fenway Park. In 2006, Jason once again teamed up with Verizon and the Massachusetts Teachers Association and thousands of public school teachers across the state to encourage K-8 students to be World Champion Readers by giving them the chance to read their way to Fenway this summer.
"I really believe in the power of reading," said Varitek. "I know that the more kids read, the better they do in school.”
The new 2006 poster (left) features Jason Varitek reading 86 Years: The Legend of the Boston Red Sox. The book tells the story of the Red Sox miraculous 2004 World Series win by starting back in 1918, when Boston was enjoying its fifth World Series victory. Author Melinda R. Boroson and illustrator Gary R. Phillips bring the legend up to date by taking us through every heart-pounding moment of the 2004 post-season. A book that can be enjoyed and treasured by all ages, 86 Years uses delightful verse and vibrant illustrations to capture the exhilaration and never-say-die spirit of that momentous time for generations to come.
This summer, 200 students and their teachers will each win tickets to Fenway Park.
